Sunday, September 6, 2012 Spoleto

Sunday, September 6, 2012:

Sunday was spent relaxing, it seems like we have been doing a lot of that recently, however the transfer from Praiano to Spoleto took a lot out of us physically lugging all of our suitcases.  The train transfer in Rome was made with 4 minutes to spare, but we made it!

It is hard to physically describe Spoleto. It is built on a hill, which is typical for most towns in this area, and has a castle.  We will probably tour the castle on Monday.  We are staying in what I would call the old part of town.  The buildings are all very old and narrow streets with mostly cobblestone pavement.  There are several streets here where car traffic is not allowed and most streets within the walled area have limited traffic.

Our morning routine has changed since we have arrived in Spoleto. In Praino, while the view from our apartment was wonderful, we were not able to travel easily since the town was quite small and traveling to another town was done via overcrowded buses   Most mornings were spent on the patio watching the sun rise on the town below and just relaxing having coffee in the apartment.

Here in Spoleto we are getting up in the morning and walking a block to a little bar which serves nice pastries and good strong dark coffee.  Fortunately they do not serve gelato’s or we would be starting the day off with one of those also..

Notice the difference in the construction of the wall which is part of the original wall around the town.  The lowest level consists of triangle shaped building blocks originally installed prior to the Roman era.  The next level is rectangular with the majority being installed between the 4th and 1st Century B.C., with the last level consisting of smaller bricks being completed around 1886.

Shirl saw this on one of our walks and said look, “Even girls give guys flowers”  I said “I don't think so, he
had already given the flowers to her”

Door photos  There are numerous different types of doors here, mostly just old and sturdy.

There are many, many gelato stands in our area, and one must taste them all in order to know which one is the best one!!

Monday we will tour the castle and then on Tuesday we will probably rent a car and drive to some adjacent towns.

Time to get back to the bridge game.
